Scope of smart city challenges is too big and costly to tackle alone
Due to the complexity, many companies in the industry decided not to focus on smart cities. But not Qualcomm. Qualcomm is attracted to solving hard problems and sees smart cities as a tremendous opportunity.

Qualcomm’s philosophy is that solving the complex problems associated with smart cities can’t be done alone by one company. It takes a consortium and an ecosystem.

In creating this ecosystem, Qualcomm leads and brings best-of-breed solutions to the table. Qualcomm has financing options, knows how to do data management integration, and uses APIs to integrate products. This approach has been extremely successful. And, it applies to far more than just “smart cities.” Qualcomm is also focused on large-scale deployments, which can include smart airports, ports, stadiums, campuses, and more. In fact, smart cities are only 30% of Qualcomm’s practice; the other 70% are smart connected spaces.

The Smart Cities Accelerator Program focuses the ecosystem on opportunities
Based on the need for a consortium to digitally transform a particular space—with integrated platforms and scalable solutions—Qualcomm has launched a unique model: the Smart Cities Accelerator Program. This is a marketplace for companies with products and solutions to exhibit their offerings and participate in various opportunities. (Mr. Pandit compared it to Match.com.)
This program provides a way for ecosystem members to collaborate on new opportunities and start monetizing these opportunities.

This Accelerator Program:
AI + IoT creates an intelligent wireless edge
Devices are going to have so much data that it won’t be practical, feasible, or economical to move all of this data back to the cloud. Instead, it will be necessary to create an intelligent wireless edge. “Everything happens at the edge,” said Mr. Pandit. “You need AI on the edge.”
“AIoT is the future—it’s artificial intelligence with IoT. You’re going to see many devices out there which are connected. You will see many devices which have edge computing. AIoT is the way to go. That’s what’s going to take this industry forward.”
A term that Qualcomm is strongly advocating is “AIoT.” This means equipping internet of things (IoT) devices with artificial intelligence.
To support AIoT is the Qualcomm IoT Services Suite, which solves for IoT fragmentation with integrated, scalable, end-to-end solutions for plug-and-play deployment. Qualcomm’s IoT Services Suite is a consortium of best-of-breed products and services developed by Qualcomm in conjunction with partners. It includes AI, edge compute, and private networks as part of an end-to-end platform that provides IoT as a service. This suite enables over 30 smart verticals and segments that are ready for commercial deployment.
Bringing the ecosystem together to solve specific use cases
A term in the industry is a “master system integrator.” Qualcomm is one step above that, serving as a “master system orchestrator.”

This orchestration requires a complete end-to-end portfolio to enable smart spaces. It requires intelligent operations and intelligent management, sensing devices, edge processing, data management, and applications that can solve particular use cases. These applications can be applied to cities, retail, factories, logistics, transit, airports, stadiums—any type of smart connected spaces.
